Introduction

In the past 30 years, there have been spectacular scientific and technological developments in Intensive Care Units (ICUs). This has been the cause of a notable increase in survival rates for patients admitted to these units. In Spain, the Spanish Society of Critical and Intensive Medicine and Coronary Care Units (SEMICYUC (acronym in Spanish)) hasestimated the survival rate at over 90%. The standard of training, and the performance, of healthcare professionals dedicated to the critically ill patient, is excellent.
